| Tackling Disadvantage: Policy on early school leaving |

T. Fleming, M. Murphy (NUI Maynooth): Squaring the Circle: An analysis of programmes in Dublin schools to prevent early school-leaving, with recommendations for a model of best practice (2000)
In its initial Position Paper adopted in May 1999, the Education & Employment Working Group established a number of priorities in tackling educational disadvantage and low skill levels. Among these was a decision to commission a comprehensive overview of the issues around early school leaving in Dublin, the effectiveness of programmes in place to tackle it, and recommendations towards a model of best practice.
The resulting publication - launched by the Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern T.D., in June 2000 - has had a major impact on policy and practice, and contributed to ongoing policy development. It also gave rise to a lively seminar in 2001 at which leading practitioners and policy makers defined and debated the key issues for the future (Preventing Early School Leaving in Dublin (seminar report).
